Is it hard to get into broadcasting for a career??

Good heavens, yes. Even with a degree in communications, there are far fewer jobs than available candidates, particularly if you're talking about on-air positions. If you go into a small market, chances are you could find something, but the pay would be pretty low. However, experience is experience, and most broadcasters do start in really small markets.

It sounds cynical but it really helps if you are good looking and well connected.

At the primer level absolutely. One thing that they can't train you in and you must have is charisma.
