Read the Wikipedia article on the 2007 French Presidential election:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_presidential_election,_2007

This is mainly about candidates to date, issues, and results of public opinion polls. Relatively little about the system of election itsself, but there is a few lines on the esentials of the system under "Requirements". Official candidates have to be confirmed by a Constitutional Council and the Council has to receive nomination papers from candidates endorsed by at least 500 elected officials. Thereafter, the election process if largely a two-stage popular election.

For more detail on the Presidential election system, see the somewhat mroe detailed paragraphs on electing the President in the Wikipedia article "President of the French Republic": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_France

FindLaw has an article, written in 2002 — the last Presidential election year — on the "fatal flaw" in France's two-stage election process: http://writ.news.findlaw.com/amar/20020503.html
