To teach in a college-
Four years of undegrad work in History
Two years for your Master's
Two or three years for your PhD
Unless you're really rich you'll need time off between degrees to earn some money!

To teach in a high school-
Four years of undergrad work in History
Ideally, a twelve- or sixteen-month teacher training program culminating in a B.Ed degree and teaching certification (this is the Canadian way)
