It was the way Japanese soldiers committed suicide rather than risk being captured and dishonor their country. They pretty much took a knife and disemboweled themselves. Also known as Sppuku. From Wikipedia:
Seppuku (Japanese: 切腹, "cutting the belly") is a form of Japanese ritual suicide by disembowelment.
Seppuku is also known as hara-kiri (腹切り, "belly-cutting") and is written with the same kanji as seppuku but in reverse order with an okurigana. In Japanese, hara-kiri is a colloquialism, seppuku being the more formal term. Samurai (and modern adherents of bushido) would use seppuku, whereas ordinary Japanese (who in feudal times as well as today looked askance at the practice) would use hara-kiri. Hara-kiri is the more common term in English, where it is often mistakenly rendered "hari-kari."
The practice of committing seppuku at the death of one's master is known as oibara (追腹 or 追い腹); the ritual is similar.

It's basically stabbing yourself with a small sword in the stomach.

Hara Kiri, the Japanese ritual suicide--the victim stabs himself in the belly with a ceremonial sword then takes a few slices. Not pretty. Quite extreme. Avoid this at all costs!

it's pronounced hara kiri, it's basically japanese ritualistic suicide used to restore your honour when yopu screwed up during their fuedal era. Consists of you kneeling cuting yourself open with a tanto (short one sided blade) while an executioner behind you waits to cut off your head....wonderful huh

It means to stab yourself (to die). Your spelling is wrong though. I wish I knew the proper spelling for you.
