DID THEY NOT KNOW THEY WERE GOING TO BE TRADED? DOESN'T THE LEAGUE GIVE THEM PERMISSION BEFORE BEING TRADED. I MEAN THE HOCKEY PLAYER KNOWS THE CONTRACT HE WANTS TO GET SO WHY IS HE SHOCKED IF THE TEAM CAN'T AFFORD HIM???? For example Ryan Smyth going to New York Islanders. Media says he and his wife were shocked and mentally tired from this trade...why would they be did't Ryan know he would be traded??

Some know, some don't
A lot of the "shock factor" involves their destination
Even with plenty of advanced notice, imagine the shock if you found out you were going to the Flyers

Just because a player gets traded does not mean that the team has told them that they are looking to trade him. Sometimes players have a feeling they're going to be traded based on their own personal stats and the lack of team success. However, in the case of Ryan Smyth, he is a player who was having a career year on a team that was trying to make the playoffs, which was the only franchise he had ever played for, and he thought that they would give him the money he was looking for on his contract. He probably figured if they didn't do it now, they would try again in the offseason instead of trading him. That is why he was shocked that he was traded. They also probably didn't let him know that he was going to be traded if they didn't have a deal done by the deadline, which adds to it. Sometimes organizations let players know that they are going to be traded at some point, so that the player can sort of ready themselves for the trade. Most of the time though, players aren't all that sure if they will be traded or not, and some never think they will be, so they are surprised when they get the call from their team saying they have been traded.

Some players find out from their club or agent. And like Smyth, some find out from the media.

I don't think anyone in the NHL saw Smyth being traded, it was very shocking.

I'm a big Smyth supporter and a bit of an Oilers fan as well, so I have mixed feelings on this one. I think Lowe was backed up into this situation. Smyth wanted more money, Lowe had to also sign 3 other key players in the Oilers lineup.

Well, some players need to give their permission before they're traded because they have a no-trade clause in their contracts. But not all players have that, so teams can trade them anytime. As for Ryan Symth, he played 12 years for the Edmonton Oilers. He was the heart and soul of the team and he didn't expect the team to trade him even if they couldn't get a deal done.

Smyth said months ago that there would not be a hometown discount in his contract for the Oilers, and that if they wanted to keep him they would have to pay market value. I can see being mentally tired from the contract talks that fell through, but when a deal couldn't be reached he should have expected to be traded. Quick correction too, Ryan Smyth wasn't the "C" for Edmonton. Jason Smith was and still is.

Smyth has been with the Oilers since 1994, has been the C for many years and was successor to great Oiler C's and Messier and Gretzky. Though he should have seen the writing on the wall with the exits of Mess and Gretz, he obviously is attached to the organization and more importantly, the community. Unless you have had to make the choice to leave the place you and your family call home, you will never know the emotional strain that results.

only got here about... and that i will continuously be a Manny fan. he's pleasing and interesting and a damn reliable hitter... the perfect Righty contained in the game and he became tailor made for Fenway... Its a shame that both those obdurate egos had to damage eachother like they did, the red Sox administration and Manny. are you asking reason you examine the writing on the wall that Tek isn't gonna have a normal bargin with the red Sox q4? he's gonna desire years... the red Sox in no way supply years. i do not hate Damon as a lot as I used to, i imagine the red Sox botched that one, he's in reality been to the DL once because he left Boston...and he became the face of the team, and a catalist for the offense... they actually have not had a definate leadoff catalist because he left... Ellsbury nonetheless needs yet another year or so... even as that commerce went down i became pissed! Yankees continuously attempt this tho. Nomar, they were on condition that one suitable... Nomar is valueless now, has been because spring 04. i don't think of absolutely everyone in Boston likes Nomar anymore. i'm death to make certain what Braves followers say to this question...

I can see where he might be shocked just because now he has to go to a totally different team and try to play there. He played for the Oilers for 13 years and has gotten use to the feeling of putting on the jersey and representing Edmonton. I myself would be shocked, but then again I see where you are coming from.

Well I mean its not unthinkable in their minds. They understand the possibility.

There are things called franchise players where teams tend to sacrifice. Gonna be harder now with the cap.

But people like Brodeur, Sakic, etc . . . just become part of/synonymous with a team.
