depends on wat position u wanna play....id recommend dribbling. if u can protect the ball from defenders then thats HUGE. not to mention dribbling with both hands. we all forget to practise dribbling with the weaker hand...thats the hand that needs most practise!!!! walk around dirbbling....soon u will spend less time thinking about the dribbling and it will happen naturally as it does with ur stronger hand.
in addition u gotta master that outside shot......wouldnt hurt to be in top condition either.
when i was playing high school basketball i played point gaurd for my team. i fount that u need to be in top shape (if not ur on the bench...and i never like getting benched!!!). u gotta be able to push the ball up and away from defenders....drive and pass the ball....drive and pass the ball inside to open bigger players....AND hit the 3 pointer!!!!
those 3 things and u will find urself with some solid playing time....good luck with it all!!!!!

There are alot of good suggestions in the answer for this queston. I'm a high school coach and i'll tell you 3 things that will highly increase your chances of making the team. The first thing you need to work on is Defense. At your height if you are a good, quick defender you can give people fits! This brings me to the second thing you need to work on. Your Atheletic ability. Work out dailey. Increase your strength and quickness as well as your jumping ability and don't forget to strengthen you heart. By heart, i mean you hustle and will to win. Show that you want it more than anyone else on the court. Thirdly, work on some of your biggest weaknesses. Whatever you can't do very well, work hard at to improve in those areas. This way you become a well rounded player.
Just remember, just because you are shorter than most basketball players doesn't mean you can't be a great player. A few of the best players i've ever seen play are under 6 foot!
Good Luck!

The best thing you can work on is your ball handling and your defense. Since you are only 5'5 right now most high school coaches aren't going to look at you as a scoring threat so the best way to get on the team is to be a lock down defender. The best way to improve to make the team is to play a lot of pickup 5 on 5 games and concentrate on your defense and running the point on these games.

Well since you're 5'5 and younger than everybody, you're probably gonna be a guard. So this means u should definitlay work on your ball handling abilities if the coach puts you at point guard. Also, work on shooting from free-throw line range, to 3 point range. That's the most important thing guards need to do. Shoot, and handle the ball. Also court vision is important and setting up your teammates. I say play ALOT of pickup games at like your gym or rec center with highschool kids because that's in my experience the best way to get better.

there are three things i would suggest that you work on to begin
the game of basketball. the first is the last that you will hear from
most people: learn to play defense. a marginal offensive player
that plays great defense and rebounds will always be in the game. at your level of play, learn to overplay your man to his/her natural hand as most players dont handle the ball with both hands well. don't run along side a player who's coming up the court when the ball is turned over. turn and get all the way back on defense. learn to "block out" on defense to keep your man from offensive rebounding. if you overplay his natural hand, you can come up and overplay him closer. take full step to the left if
he is right handed. never reach in and foul but its ok to reach up from the floor. your legs must be flexed and you must get in shape so that you don't get fatigued. learn to handle the ball by standing back to back with someone and dribbling while trying to
steal each other's ball. dribble up the court looking at the horizon,
switch hands after mastering that. bend your knees. feel the ball
as it comes up into the cup of your hand. get your coach to
work with your shooting but at this stage don't try a lot of different
shots. get a basic shot. practice it close to the basket. when you
master 5 feet then move to 8. then move to 10 and so forth.
remember, if you want to play don't just play at one part of the
game .. be a player! have a great time!

free throw shooting is essential. Any good basketball player should be able to hit 8/10 freethrows

You won't be on your high school JV team b/c if you're in 8th grade, you're not in high school yet. Isn't there an 8th grade team?

chess.
Seriously, you need to first perfect the 3 pointer, since that almost negates your 'challenge' in height
