I'm currently an engineering student at Umass-Lowell and I commute. I'd like to live at school but I find Umass-Lowell to be kind of depressing and I don't really like it there.

What I'm asking is if Umass-Amherst is a suitable school for a quiet, introverted student like me?? I've heard wild stories about the place and people calling it "zoo"-mass. I'd like to get some feedback from students with experience there and I'd like to know if there are lots of people there with personalities like mine??

Yeah, I know what you mean...not much to excite or sooth the senses. I attended it but my brother in law graduated from there. He only raves about the fraternity he belonged to but has not contact with any part of that life now. Yeah, not much of a social life but it is a great school. I now live out near UMass and the beauty is it is a 5 college area so there is more to do funwise and there is nothing depressing about it. This is a nice area. It was always called Zoo Mass 35 years ago. State schools are full because of the cost and there is alway the party crowd in every college. It is not a zoo...in fact it has high recognition nationally and internationally especially for graduate programs. Good Luck.

I went to UMass as a grad student (in astronomy). While the undergrad experience is different from the graduate experience, based on my own experience I think you'll like it there. I lived off campus - there are many nice, quiet apartment complexes that are affordable and are right on the (free) bus route. I don't know what it's like to live on campus, but if I remember correctly they have some special dorms with strictly imposed quiet times or something like that. I think you'll find lots of people like yourself that are not loud and obnoxious.
