OK the first thing to do will sound weird but it helps.Wear an old pair of socks you DON'T want anymore for a day and then take them off and put 1 in her cage and throw away the other. This will get her used to thinking that your scent doesn't pose a threat. This is important because hamster eyesight is not that great.

Then wait 2 days (leaving her with the sock)then when she is awake and not eating or grooming put some sunflower seeds on your palm and put your hand in the cage. She may nibble your fingers but will not bite hard-nibbling is her way of seeing what you are.Let her take the seeds but don't try and lift her out or pet her.

Repeat that once or twice a day for 2 or 3 days, then try and gently stroke her with a finger while she is near your hand.Do that for a couple of days then assuming she doesn't run, gently put both hands side by side with her in the middle and slowly lift her out,sit down and stroke her with 1 hand for a minute then put her back, repeat this over several days or a week slowly increasing how long you have her out for.

Eventually she will be totally relaxed with you.The key is patience.

I've got a male syrian hamster and have had 2 males beforehand too. We let ours settle into their new home for the first week and then start to handle and 'train'. So, it would be about the right time to start with yours I suppose! There are things you need to make sure of before you start- If it jumps there are no small spaces for it to get too, the atmosphere should be calm and quiet with only one person handling and getting the hamster used to them. Also make sure that your hands DO NOT smell of food. Wash your hands before (and after obviously) handling otherwise it may bite and you may drop the small frightened confused hamster. When you start just put your hand into the cage and let the hamster sniff and get used to your smell. After doing this for a few days try to cup your hands around the hamster and pick him up gently. KEEP HIM OVER THE CAGE! This will mean that if he does jump- he will just land in the cage- you know then that he needs more time. I know it sounds a little strange but you could try putting your hamster into one of those travel case things for hamsters (or a cardboard box) and put the plug in the bath (AN EMPTY BATH!!!!!!!), get in and let him in with you. (WEAR OLD CLOTHES) Then just let him explore and run around over you, the slippery walls of the bath means he won't escape. Don't move otherwise there's a chance he could be flattened! Also this means that if he pees or anything (that's why the old clothes) then you don't need to mop up anything. Take it slowly and remember not to panick or get angry. Good luck!

i have had many hamsters over the past 6 years and the best way to tame my hamster was if it ever bites you i hit my so gently and it never bit me again then if it decides to run away like out of its cage i locked the cage for just 1 day and give it a timeout you just have to treat your hamster like you would treat your kids i hoped this helped and good luck with your new baby!!! <3

Hamsters are usually quite tame. You keep her in a cage don't you?

"taming" any new pet is usually difficult, but if you're not too attached to it, then return it for a gerbil. they are much friendlier.
