You dont' it's illegal to even touch and turn it.

You MUST call the Gas Company out to turn it back on because if something goes wrong and a fire breaks out the Gas Company can be held liable at no- fault, but if you turn it on its' your fault and then the Gas Company hits you up as well for turning it back on.

There is what we call a procedure. Turn off all gas appliances in the House.

Turn on your Gas and check for leaks to insure safety through the house and no leaks.

Some carry leak detecters to insure that your Home is safe.

If you turn that line on by popping off the tab, your asking for trouble.

This is what a Black African American did in Columbus, Ga. They turned his gas off for not paying the bill. So he rents a propane tank from Ray Rents and wants to attach it, but he needs left handed threads so he goes to a pipe shop and has one made. He then attaches the line to the tank and has his son light the stove pilot. END OF STORY (RIP)

THERE WAS NO (REGULATOR) attached....that's where he fricked up or it would of worked, but that ignorant move and mistake cost him his home and his Son.

The explosion was heard three blocks down the road and sparked a major law suit in which he won by the way and you know why??? Even though, he had the pipe made, there was a flaw found that Ray Rents was not actually in legal limits by law renting the tanks where he did and was not by State standards so the idiot still got money for his stupid mistake.

You usually won't be able to do this, there is two ways that they can shut it off, one is at your meter (old type) with a special wrench designed to prevent tampering and people like you turning on thier gas without paying or having safetly defects. The other way is a valve close to your property line which also needs a special wrench, do not attempt to try to turn it back on with vise-grips as the company will charge you with stealing and it's very easy for them to find out because your meter will read different when the company shuts it off and they do come back occasionaly to check to see if you have used any.

Besides all the previous answers, being illegal to turn it back on yourself and all, around here when the gas company shuts off a line to a house, there's a padlock hole on the valve ends that they do indeed put a padlock on. It's usually a big hefty one to discourage people with bolt cutters.

If the gas company shuts your gas off, they are supposed to turn it back on. If they shut it off for non-payment of a bill, then you are out of luck. If they shut it off to work on the line or something, then call them to come back and turn it back on. If your pilot lights went out when they shut it off, they were supposed to relight them before they left. Too many variables here to decide.

You can't. If the gas company turned your gas off, then you need to pay your bill. And pay it on time.

If the utility shut it off, they must turn it back on. In most states, it is against the law for anyone to turn it on without the permission of the utility.
