Well, you shouldn't start solid foods at all until they are 6 months old. Until they are at least 12 months old, breast milk or formula should be their main source of nutrition.
Talk to your babies doctor about when they want you to start solid foods. That is the best indication as to when to start them. You can also tell by the way your baby acts. If your doctor says it fine to start, then start with veggies. They aren't as sweet as fruit, so babies don't get used to sweet foods before the veggies. We started trying some peas. That didn't go over well, so we tried beans, that went over worse, so we tried squash. My second liked that one better, and my first wouldn't even touch it. Then we moved to the sweeter veggies like carrots and sweet potatoes. Both my girls loved them!!!! They say to start with one food, try that for 4-5 days, then if you don't notice any allergic reactions to that, try something else. Stick to that plan for a while, and remember that at first your baby isn't going to eat the whole jar at once. We would dump some into a little dish and save the rest in the fridge.
Before 6 months old, their digestive system just isn't up to handling solid food, and it can make them sick. So before then, just stick to formula or breast milk. NEVER GIVE A CHILD UNDER 12 MONTHS COWS MILK!!!!!! It really messes up their digestion and can cause allergies to develop that they otherwise wouldn't have. Also, avoid things like peanut butter, eggs, fish, and other dairy until after a year old. Peanut butter is one of the biggest offenders in allergies, as well as eggs. Honey is bad too, so avoid honey until your doctor says your little one can have it.
Good luck and I hope your baby likes the good veggies!!!!

Well..I took some classes on Child Dev. and I was told that, yes breast milk is the best..and instead of immediately jumping into solids, use Gerber baby foods, and if you choose as well, scramble up, lets say an egg (scrambled) and mix it, or a slightly mashed banana. It allows the baby to slowly be brought into different textures of food, as well as being healthy.

If the baby is under six months old, breastmilk or formula ONLY. (Water, juice, and tea are NOT NECESSARY!) After six months you can introduce solids - start with cereal: rice is most common, but try all of them - but one at a time. (To watch for allergic reactions.) Then introduce baby food - you can do the jarred stuff if you want, but most babies don't love it. Save the fruit and sweet vegetables (like carrots and sweet potatoes) for LAST or else you won't get your child to eat anything else. (Babies LOVE sweet stuff.) Around nine months old, your baby will probably not like the baby food anymore, and want to feed themself, so it'll be fine to give them pretty much anything you eat
just in REALLY small pieces.

well that all depends on how old your baby is. for the 1st 4-6 months your baby should be having breast milk and/or infant formula only. then you canslowly start to introduce solids, most ppl start with rice cereal then fruits & veggies, either the baby food kind or you can puree your own. then as your baby gets older he/she can have other cereals like oatmeal & barley, then around 9 months yogurt & cheese, and finger foods like cheerios and crackers broken into peices.

If your child is learning to self feed you need to make sure whatever you are feeding them is:
1. Low in Salt
2. Cut up or mashed so they do not choke
3. Not a food allergin (strawberries, honey, shellfish, egg yolks, etc)
A good balance of fruits, veggies and grains at first (rice cereal, mashed bananas and carrots) is good, slowly introduce mashed meats later and the when your child can pick up things like cheerios between her thumb and forefinger, can sit up on her own and crawls with her belly off the ground you can move onto just small chunked items you are eating.
My son turns 1 next week (OMG!) and he eats pretty much everything I do, a typical day is as follows:
Eggs and fruit for breakfast
Cooked carrots and chicken for lunch
Eggplant Parm. over wheat rotini for dinner.
bottles and snacks in between (cheerios, gerber first food puffs, beechnut banana cookies).
I would recommend avoiding biter biscuits. My oldest choked on one.
