Are you talking about that movie with Nicole Kidman as the mother with the 2 kids who couldn't stand sunlight?

I think it might have had to do with the fact that he died in battle. Somehow he was locked into his role as a soldier in a war that couldn't end (for him).

He was killed in a foreign war. News of this made Kidman's character go mad who killed her children then herself. She and her children return as ghosts, none of them knowing what happened to them. The servants come out of the graveyard to help them figure that out. They are all ghosts who are bound to the place where they died. By admission of one of the servants, they do not fully understand how the husband is allowed to temporarily return, but she believed it was out of need. Still he had to return to the area to which he was bound and she had to remain in hers.
