Pelosi pledged to rid Congress of corruption. But now she wants to put Rep. William Jefferson on the Homeland Security Committee. The Democrat from Louisiana was taken off the Ways and Means panel last year after the FBI found $90,000 in his freezer.

I don't trust either of them any further than I could throw them. Jefferson cannot get a security clearance yet Pinhead Pelosi wants him as chairman of homeland security....that's like turning a sex maniac loose in a whorehouse with a credit card...STUPID!

i assume the guy became promised a seat on that committee a protracted time in the past. i don't comprehend the different reason that the Dems might insist on giving him the spot. It became an exceedingly dumb pass, did not the Dems comprehend that in the event that they did this, they may well be criticized? Wasn't there all of us else waiting to fill the spot? i don't think of the guy has been chanced directly to blame of something (yet), yet i think a minimum of two human beings have been indicted for bribing him. Do the Democrats desire to start up a combat with the Republicans over this? seems fairly dumb to me... Love Jack

Well, given that Republican Jerry Lewis, also under federal investigation, is the ranking member of the Appropriations Committee, I'm seeing some hypocrisy here. Jefferson, we've been told was videotaped two years ago and has never beed charged. Why not? If thry have the evidence, he should be charged. It seems wrong to say they have solid evidence and never produce it!

I’m not going to defend the appointment. But I will say it’s awfully curious how Republicans ignored almost all the Republican scandals: Bob Ney, Tom Noe, Randy “Duke” Cunningham, and Jack Abramoff, to name a few. I can’t recall discussion on right-wing media about any of them. Even the Scooter Libby trial has gone largely uncovered on “real journalism” FOX News’ prime time debate show. Meanwhile, Tom DeLay who HAS been indicted (for, essentially, money laundering) got a standing ovation and a pundit’s chair on FOX News.

Rep. Jefferson was stupid enough to get caught. So yes, it is a bit scary that he is now sitting on a committee which is charged with overseeing the most onerous responsibility the federal government has.

I wondered why he was redeemed so quickly. Then I remembered the words of, I believe, Harold Wilson (British Prime Minister in the 1960's and 70's) - a week is a long time in politics.

they all wash each other's underams. So Jefferson was found with 90,000 in his freezer. What else is new. Bet plenty of members of Congress and the Senate have 'bribes' hidden in their closets or basements or underwear. No, Jefferson wouldn't be my choice, in fact, Pelosi wouldn't have been my choice as Speaker either. But then I can't stand Bush either. So go figure.(And no, he hasn't been tried or convicted. So if this happened several months ago, what is the holdup anyway?)

I think it is an abomination of politics to see an obvious thief placed in a position of trust. Him getting re-elected is a joke on the American people.

He and Tom Delay are the Siamese twins of politics.

I asked a similar question yesterday, and got a violation. But, before it was erased, I will tell you what I learned. The black caucus has put pressure on Pelosi (who wanted to appoint someone else) to appoint WJ, because he has not been 'tried and convicted' of any wrongdoing. it is not something she wanted to do...and since it will go to the floor, hopefully his nomination will be denied. It just goes to show you...the power of purse strings.

I don't think that job should be held by anyone who can not get a security clearance through regular means. Being invested for bribes makes one ineligible for a security clearance.

Not indicted. And he's just sitting on the committee, not running it. He still is a member of congress.

This is why opium sales are up in Afghanistan... Cause the Taliban are partying on the soon to be failed national security of America.
