I just had 25 trees cut down in my yard. I noticed that several of them had large holes up the middle of the trunks. This includes several oaks and a sweetgum. The trees seemed healthy, and so do the others that are left. However in the past 5 years, Ive had 2 large Oaks Die for no appearent reason. Any idea why? What do I need to do to protect the others?

These are not woodpecker type holes. Some are 14 inch diameter and run from the base upwards, all the way up on some of them.

It is not at all unusual for large trees to rot from the inside out. This is a frequent problem with large oaks. Many times, trees that are blown down in storms do so because they are weakened in this way. Water laying in the crotch of a tree usually starts the process.

Good luck with your search for information.
