Vlad the Impaler was the son of Vlad Dracul (1436-1442; 1443-1447) and grandson of Mircea the Old (1386-1418). Vlad Dracul was a knight of the Dragon Order by the Hungarian King. He had a dragon on his coat of arms and that which earned him the nick name of Dracul (the devil). Vlad the Impaler used to sign himself Draculea or Draculya (the devil's son) Which was distorted into Dracula. He ruled in Wallachia between 1456-1462 and in 1476. He was a prince. The tourist destinations like the Monastery of Snagov near Bucharest or the Bran Castle near Brasov mix legend and history. Many German & Spanish princes would also impale enimes, theives and criminals. The Saxons were actually credited with writing about these atrocities in books and pamphlets. See Romanian History, Dracula between legend and reality.

He was born in Sighisoara, which is in Romania and ended his days at Corvin Castle in Romania (where Most Haunted Live's most recent show came from).
Have a look at the links below, the last 1 gives you some good history.
