Both Kenmore and Singer are fine old brands with good reputations. Either one would be a good choice if it does what you want it to do. Both would generally be reliable and sturdy machines.

That said, JoAnn Fabric and Craft is currently having a sale. Check out their online ad (if you don't get the paper one by post) and see if it's got a good machine in it. The ads are a little different for different parts of the country, so plug in your ZIP code to see yours. They also sell online, but I don't know if that covers the sewing machines. Brother, White, and Simplicity are also reliable brands. Husqvarna is one of the sturdiest machines available.

With any mechanical machine (sewing or otherwise) maintenance is every bit as important to its longevity as is brand. Be sure you clean and oil the sewing machine after every 8-10 hours of use (or after every 4-5 hours of use if you go with the Singer.) Cleaning and oiling your own sewing machine isn't hard. Keep the owner's manual near the machine and refer to it frequently. Those generally cover cleaning and oiling; some even tell you how often it's needed for that particular brand..

I like my Kenmore. But I like my mom's old Singer too. A lot depends on what model or year you're buying. If you have model numbers you might want to take them over to this site to see what they think about them:

It would really help to know which exact models you were considering. But going by name and reputation only, I would go with Singer over Kenmore.
