They're facing the speaker to get feedback. Turning towards and away from the speaker gives them special effects.

Some do this to tune into the drummer to hold with the back beat, or to just get supportive mental feedback from a trusted friend.
Still others say it's because it's less distracting, - less glaring spot lights, less flashing camera lights, and it's a chance to give the female cheering fans a really good look at their rock star bum.
Personally I think that a lot of these leads do this just to look cool, and show disdain for their audiences', - in effect this physical "turning their back" on the paying public, is supposed to show how much of an "Artiste" the musician is, and just how deep he is into his music - and when he is really "into it" - nothing else matters' or exists.

probably cos they don't want to expose their technique to other guitarists and have them doing as good solos as them, either that or they're miming :-)
