The legend goes that St. Patrick, back in the day, used a shamrock to teach about Christianity. The three leaves were to represent God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost.

But if you are just wondering what's in a shamrock shake from Mcdonalds...it's basically vanilla with green food coloring.

A shamrock is a three leaf clover in which St. Patrick used to teach about God. It resembles a cross slightly so he showed it like this:
Father (God) [top leaf]

Son (Jesus) [stem]

Holy [right leaf] Spirit [left leaf]

Literally inside a shamrock, like the weed, are chloroplasts in which it uses to do photosynthesis and make energy to keep itself alive.

In a shamrock? You mean the drink? It's Irish whiskey, Kahlua, and Baileys. Mostly whiskey.
