To you what is the scariest urban legend?Mine is the clown one....

A couple with children were trying out a new babysitter. About an hour after they left for a night on the town, they realized they had forgotten to give her their cell phone number, so one of them called her.

After she wrote down the number, the babysitter asked if she could watch satellite TV in their bedroom. She had just put the children to bed and wanted to watch a particular show. (The parents didn’t want their children watching too much garbage, so the living room TV did not have satellite channels.)

Well of course she could watch TV in their room, they replied. The babysitter had one other request: could she put a sheet or blanket over the clown statue that was in the bedroom? It kind of made her nervous.

Take the children and go to the neighbors, said whichever parent was talking to her. We’ll call the police. We don’t have a clown statue.

I like the one about the guy with the big knife hiding in the back seat of the ladies car and the truck driver just about runs her off the road trying to save her from him.
But your story just about scared the willies out of me - reminds me of Tim Curry in the Stephen King movie "It". Think that movie ruined clowns for alot of people!

A teenage boy drove his date to a dark and deserted Lovers' Lane for a make-out session. After turning on the radio for mood music, he leaned over and began kissing the girl.

A short while later, the music suddenly stopped and an announcer's voice came on, warning in an urgent tone that a convicted murderer had just escaped from the state insane asylum — which happened to be located not far from Lovers' Lane — and that anyone who noticed a strange man lurking about with a hook in place of his right hand should immediately report his whereabouts to the police.

The girl became frightened and asked to be taken home. The boy, feeling bold, locked all the doors instead and, assuring his date they would be safe, attempted to kiss her again. She became frantic and pushed him away, insisting that they leave. Relenting, the boy peevishly jerked the car into gear and spun its wheels as he pulled out of the parking space.

When they arrived at the girl's house she got out of the car, and, reaching to close the door, began to scream uncontrollably. The boy ran to her side to see what was wrong and there, dangling from the door handle, was a bloody hook.

The scariest urban legends are those that foment hate and misrepresent people and ideas. So many of those legends are designed to hijack the Web and to disseminate misinformation.

In Rochester, NY, one of our local malls was largely put out of business by the racially based myths that young black males were roaming the parking lots of this suburban mall attacking white women and old white people in general. These were nearly entirely false but the legends took on a life of their own and spread via the Web. The hatred and fear they generated has nearly killed the mall.

Same type of thing happens during election season. The smearing is simply dreadful. But ultimately, determining what is accurate is up to each of us. If we are driven to fear by lies and myth, we probably deserve our fate. I use the Snopes Website often to debunk the trash that floats on the Web. Use your Reply To All and give them all a wake-up call.
