If your motherboard supports USB as a boot device, yes.

You can access your BIOS settings and see if USB boot is enabled, then choose it in the Boot Sequence screen.

If you aren't comfortable editing your BIOS, or don't know how to get to it, take it to a computer repair shop.

They're only partially right. Your BIOS does need to support booting from USB. However, if you're trying to boot Windows XP or any other Windows operating system, you will not be able to do it. It has to do with the way Windows initializes USB ports and devices. It will initalize it, and for a split second, it loses power and then gets it back. When this happens, and you're trying to boot from USB, it'll generate a BSOD. You would have to alter quite a few installation files from Windows in order for it to boot. A Linux operating system called Puppy Linux can boot directly from a flash drive without any problem. Try looking into that if you want an alternate OS.
