Nielson ratings are one way. They started with Diaries, but now use set top boxes.

With the advent of TiVo, they have been getting into the act as well. The drawback to Nielson was that the TV had to be on.

Since so many people "time shift" now, TiVo is the PERFECT solution. They report on what was recorded, watched AND can even tell what was rewound and rewatched! (like the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" - it was the most rewatched event in TiVo history!)

It is then generalized to the entire population. It is a very flawed and possibly unscientific way of getting ratings, especially when technology should make that easier.
