There is a solvent which can be purchased from paint stores and hardware stores. Sorry to say i cannot think of the name of it right off. You can wash down the old wallpaper after scoring it slightly (not too deep as to damage the wall behind the paper). Still takes a lot of work but works better than nothing. Check with your local stores.

At your local hardware store they should have the 3 things you need to remove wallpaper. 1. A scorer....I think that's what its called at any rate. It has a handle that fits in the palm of your hand and you run it over the wall. There are wheels with teeth on the under side that poke tiny holes in the wall paper. Be careful with this if you're working with dry wall, it will dent the dry wall. Next you need a steamer. Its a plastic box w/ a hose attached to it. Steam a section of the wall and then immediately use the scraper to take the paper off. Its a two person job, really. One to steam and one to come behind the steamer with the scraper. I have been known to do it by myself, but you'll end up wishing you had a third hand. Call the hardware stores in your area, let your fingers do the walking first. I think I got my steamer at Home Depot. Good Luck!

I just watched a show where they did this. They used squirt guns. They let the water wet the paper for a few minutes and then scraped it with putty knives. Most of it came off. For the rest they used the solvent. They said the thinner the solvent, the faster it works. On the floor they put down plastic first, then the painters tarp. I'm sure it was not as easy as they made it look but I would try it.

Get a Cats Paw and a gallon of SherwinWilliams paper remover. My associate does painting for a living and he uses these two items. As far as he's concerned noting is better that SherwinWilliams remover, a Cats Paw, and a Hand Held Steamer unit.
Purchase Sh.Williams at their store, the cats paw at Lowes, the hand held steamer at Walmart.

I worked for home depot and redecorated 6 rooms with wallpaper and Jamie G's answer is spot on, you can rent all those supplies from any hardware store, but if you plan to remove from several rooms it might be prudent to purchase these items.
ps make sure you have a mask and a fan as there might be hidden mold underneath.

I have used both a steamer and solvent on wallpaper in my home. I prefer the solvent. Use a scorer, sponge on the solvent (there are brands that don't have bad fumes), wait a bit and the wallpaper pulls right off.
