I saw a movie once where a mother was intentionally poisoning her daughter, so that she can continue feeling needed by the child.

Munchausen by Proxy syndrome. You're right it keeps the child dependant on the carer.

Another reason a carer may do this is to get attention. Sympathy from realtives, friends, special attention from medical staff.
I recommend a book called 'sickened' if you want to know more

They call this Monchousing syndrome by proxy.

Though, I sometimes doubt whether this is a real condition.

The act of hurting someone else to feel needed seems to be self defeating.
*** You want to hurt them
*** You want to help them

Curious situation that could descise someone that really has a sick mind and is lying there way out of a prison sentance.
Though, you do know that without scientific proof, I cannot say for curtian.

Hi - It's called Munchhausen's syndrome by proxy. "By proxy") is because they hurt someone else rather than themselves. It is done to bring attention to themselves because they have an ailing child (usually a child) and it also keeps the other dependent on them.
