ekk!!! you need at least $50 for a gerbil!!!

Food
cage (get a glass cage so u can see though the glass. wire cages are okay but they are hard to clean...trust me my hamster has one and its a pain in the butt. but make sure you dont have it where it can get too hot because glass keeps heat IN. Also you MUST make a wire top for it because THEY WILL escape.)
Wire (for the glass cage)
water battle
food dish
bedding (ASPEN i think...thats what i use for my hamster)
toys (yes they have toys!! you dont want him to be bored!!)
treats
Vitamin drops (for water, they are good for your pet. not nessicarrily needed but you know vitamnins maintain a good healthy pet)
wheel (get plastic they can get their feet stuck in wire ones)
platic ball (to run around on your floor)
ask your local petstore about stuff you need.

also... look into hamsters too. Be sure to read up on both to see if a gerbil is EXACTLY what you want. compare the differences . Be sure you get a pet you will love no matter what species it is. Like for example Dwarf hamsters dont like to cuddle as much and they dont like to be held as often. i know because i have one but i still love him. Gerbils also dont like to be held as often. If you want a pet to hold and such get a teddy bear hamster or a winter white siberian. and YES they WILL bite if they get scared!

Another thing is when u get your pet. HE WILL BE FREAKED OUT. Its a new invorment for him. I would out your hand in the cage but DONT try to pick him up right away. put treats in your hand and let him come to you. He may occasionally nip at you but dont he dicouraged. :-). After a couple of days when he is on your hand lift him up GENTLY. in his cage dont take him out yet do this for a couple days until he gets used to it. NEVER let your pet on a floor! Bed is fine BUT YOU MUST WATCH HIM. (by the way petstores only carry MALES)

When looking for a pet you want one that is energetic and that dont look sickly. Make sure that its coat is nice and full or the store could be selling them TOO YOUNG! They should have nice clear eyes too.

DO NOT RIP THEIR TAILS OFF (my little brothers did this a couple of years back when i was in 4th grade and i tell you what my poor gerbils never have a pretty tail again! but it is hard to do that...not trying to scare you)

Anyways i hope i helped. And yes. I did type ALL of this. I didnt copy anything. LOL.

Best of luck with your new pet!!

Kay. (im in highscool by the way...in case you thought i was like in middle school or something)

and

Twinkie (the "robo" dwarf)

24 dollars is not enough for a complete set up for a gerbil. You will need more. Here is a suggestion though, Ebay and other sights like localfiles.com or craigslist sometimes have people selling cages and things for cheaper than a pet store.
Sometimes you can find people giving gerbils away for free there too and sometimes they are better quality, younger, and cheaper than a pet store. Gerbils cant have plastic cages because they can chew right through the cage, they need metal barred cages, or aquariums with a top on it. Gerbils can jump high, They need wheels and toys and things to chew on. They horde food and sometimes it gets moldy so you need to clean the cage frequently and also the food is not so cheap. I know your excited and want the pet today but to get everything properly you will need more money and more time. I would say go for it after about 40$.

I'm sorry to say that $24 is not likely to be enough to get a gerbil and all of the supplies that you'll need.

What I would do is this. See if you can find a cage for under the amount of money you have. Purchase that today.

As you earn more money, purchase the smaller items that you will need: a food bowl, water bottle, a running wheel (unless you buy a cage that comes with one), bedding, food, etc.

Once you have all of those things, and you have earned enough money, THEN purchase the gerbil last.

I know it stinks to wait, but gerbils are fun. It will be worth it!

one of the watering things, a cage, some bedding, food, and exercise wheel are the basics that come to mind.

You need to put extra money aside, becuase if your girbil gets it, you will need to pay for vet bills.

Good Luck though x

You will need a cage, water bottle, food dish, food, treats, a ball for him/her to run in (out of his/her cage, a wheel (for him/her to run in while in the cage), and toys.
