Most hypothyroid disease (underactive thyroid) is caused by an autoimmune condition, where your body's own immune system attacks the thyroid. There is no food that will stop or even slow down this process, and the only treatment is to take prescription medications (usually Synthroid, but there's also an Armour product) to replace what the damaged thyroid can no longer produce. Usually you take one pill each day for the rest of your life, and you will live an otherwise completely normal life.

You may also, however, be prone to other autoimmune diseases, such as pernicious anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, lupus, and others, but many people with autoimmune thyroid damage never develop any other autoimmune diseases. The best thing to do is to optimize your general health by eating very little (or no) meat and lots of fresh fruits, whole grains, and veggies of all kinds. You should also get plenty of exercise, reduce stress, sleep a healthy amount, and avoid tobacco and street drugs. Being in good general health makes all disease processes less likely to get started. But you still have to take your thyroid pill every day.

None of this is relevant if your problem is an OVERactive thyroid.

First tell me is the thyroid underactive or overactive? The answer depends upon that. There are some vegetables with more iodine (cababge and some similar stuff) which are not indicated for some people with hyperthyroid problem (overactive gland).
