Tough question. Eddie Murphy is certainly more versatile than Chris Rock. He has done not just comedy but also action, drama, and musical. In the recent Academy Awards, Murphy was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. If we ignore "Norbit," "Vampire in Brooklyn," "I Spy," "Daddy Day Care," "Showtime," and "The Adventures of Pluto Nash," it's evident that Murphy has a more impressive resume than Chris Rock.
Although, personally speaking, I find Chris Rock funnier than Murphy. His standup comedy acts were brilliant and laugh-out-loud funny.
True, Chris Rock is yet to do one decent movie. However, he has uttered so many funny lines in his stand up acts that still make me laugh today.
So, personally I prefer Chris Rock.

Chris Rock. Eddie Murphy is just SO played out. I got really sick of seeing him in stuff because it felt like I was watching the same movie or same character in everything he did.

I prefer Chris Rock because it is blindingly obvious that Eddie Murphy hates women.

They both have their moments where one is much funnier than the other.
A couple years during ago during Murphy's Pluto Nash period I would have said Rock hands down.
I say Chris Rock if its just one stand up versus the other.
I would say Eddie Murphy if its one movie performance versus another.

chris rock, i can't stick eddie murphy, he just bugs the hell out of me. i liked chris rock in that prison film with adam sandler, and was dissapointed when he died :(
