The Mexican Revolution took place between 1910 and 1920. By that point, Mexico had been free of Spain for over 80 years.

The effective outcome of the Mexican Revolution, once the infighting among partisans ended around 1930, was to put in place the Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI. Lazaro Cardenas, president between 1934 and 1940, set up the structural safeguards that kept the PRI in power until 2000.

During its last 30 years in power, the PRI grew increasingly corrupt, until it eventually collapsed under its own weight. And Ernesto Zedillo, president from 1994 to 2000, does deserve credited for instituting democratic reforms that led to a smooth transfer into genuine democracy.
