Well, an easy way is to click start, and then click run. In the run box type in dxdiag. It may ask you a question about collecting info, just hit yes. When it is all done, a box will pop up with several tabs. On the first page tho, near the very bottom of the list it will say DirectX Version. There ya gto. direct x can be found in the direct x diagnostic utility, more commonly known as dxdiag
go to run and type "dxdiag">return then when prompted click no
there is a good chance that you are currently running direct x 9.0c as this is the latest direct x and is normally installed with any graphic intense application
with the new vista o/s direct x has increased to direct x 10,but at the moment there is only one actual series of cards that run this version
the nvidia geforce 8800 series of cards are real workhorses but as yet no games have been released that run with direct x 10
you can get the latest direct x runtime from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx
good luck

when you install a game that comes bundled with directx, and you try to install it, it cant downgrade you if you have the most current version. when a game asks you if you want to install directx in the future, just click "no" because you already have the latest version for your operating system. anyway, you still have dx(, dont worry. like i said, installing an older version of directx on your computer has no effect if the version you have is a later version.
