It is neither legal nor right to kill stray dogs in Bangalore.
It is not legal because according to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 only sick or vicious animals may be euthanized. What is being practised is that all strays regardless of how friendly they are are being slaughtered.
It is not right because the entire exercise is futile. If something is not done about the garbage situation, other dogs will replace all the slaughtered ones, but until that happens Bangalore will be over run with rat/bandicoots and will probably face an outbreak of the plague within 3-6 months.

Boy, kill them...it is not their fault..it is human error. If you have dogs to protect your herd that is what they were doing. Why would you do away with them? I mean this is sad but a true fact of dogs protecting a herd. And when you have two together they go as a pack. I feel for the other dog. Did it have a collar on? If so try to call the owner/owners. The dog was on your property and there is not much anyone can do now. I also would try to call animal control to make record of the fact. Do your dogs act the same way with humans? If so then oh yes you have a big problem. Are these dogs not your pet....as you state their express purpose is to keep coyotes away? You, are not going to change a dog from protecting what is was made to do, but you can curb the behavior by keeping them in the house/kennel at night. You can get recorded messages and put them out in a herd of livestock with humans talking or dogs barking...with human scent on clothing like a scarecrow. Some people swear it works. You could call a dog behaviorist and ask for advice on what else to do. But, again this is not a dog problem.....it is human error..but the dog was on your property and your dogs did what they were trained to do.....guard the herd.

No, it isn't. That's why I cannot figure why they are mounting this large scale campaign to rid the streets of strays - healthy, friendly ones as well as any others they might come across. The tragedy is that the vicious dogs will hide from dogcatchers; it's only the social, friendly, people-trusting dogs who are getting caught and killed.

I didn't know that they kill stray dogs. The municipal corporation can decide to make rules about stray animals. The people and the anti-cruelty organisations should come forward to force them to come up with kinder and non-violent alternatives such as putting them to shelter homes.
