Shell has been an actual "sponsor" of Scuderia Ferrari since about 1996. Prior to that, they sponsored McLaren. They did sponsor Ferrari for a few years way back in the 70's, but for most of the time between then and now, Ferrari's fuel and lubricant sponsor has been the Italian company Agip. Shell was a supplier to all F1 teams in the 50's, much in the same way that Sunoco is the official fuel of NASCAR. Shell only began sponsoring F1 cars in 1970, because commercial sponsorship was actually against regulations in F1 until 1968. Prior to the rule change, F1 cars raced in the national colors of their respective countries with only small manufacturer logos to identify the make. Italian cars were red, French cars were blue, Great Britain's color was green, German cars were silver, and the Japanese cars (Honda was the only Japanese manufacturer) were white. Probably more information than you needed, but hey, you never know when it might come in handy!!

Ferrari. They even came up with a fuel formula in the 2004 season that allowed the car to go further on less fuel. In other words, the fuel got better gas mileage and power than the others, so they didn't have to use as much in the car. This also gave them a weight advantage. Lighter cars go faster. Also Agip was the Ferrari sponsor for fuel from 95 back.
