My skin has little bumps and a few acne scars. Just wondering what this procedure was all about and if anyone has had it or done it and what their thoughts are on it. Thanks!

Microdermabrasion is a great procedure for evening your skin tone and helping with small scars. Peels and laser rejuvenation are possible alternatives that also work well. The best solution is really dependent on your specific condition and what you are looking to accomplish. When you go to a consultation, make sure that the practitioners offer multiple options so that they formulate the best treatment plan. The attached site provides more information on microdermabrasion and it can also help you find a provider.

Here is a really great article on Microdermabrasion, it's limitations, and who are good candidates for it:

http://www.emedicine.com/ent/topic739.htm

There are some things you can try over the counter. They cost a lot less and may, in some cases, be equally effective.

RoC is a facial resurfacing product found in the anti-aging section. I was concerned it might cause burning and redness (never used anything like it before) but it gave me no trouble at all. Absolutely amazing product - so much so that I could see results immediately.

Ambi is a product made for women of color which helps even up your skin tone. I use it sometimes even though it isn't meant for pale white women like me. Anything like St. Ives Apricot Scrub helps prevent dead skin cell build up when used daily.

Vaseline just came out with an Intensive Care lotion for your hands and nails but it reduces age spots so I use it on my face. DHC Skincare has an interesting "wrinkle filler" kind of lotion which works only as long as it lasts - a day.

Here are some common ingredients:

Keratin - Keratinocytes produce keratin, a protein that gives skin its strength and flexibility and waterproofs the skin surface.

AHA or Alpha Hydroxy Acid - "give results that are similar to microdermabrasion - erasing fine lines and giving the skin a smoother appearance with 1 to 3 applications. However, these treatments must be repeated every 3 to 6 months to maintain this skin appearance."

Retin-A - Wrinkle reducer. May take up to 6 months to see a reduction.

All of these things can be very drying to your skin and make it more sensitive. If you use them moisturize a lot and always wear sunscreen.

I just turned 39, and I've been getting microdermbrasion monthly for about 3 years, I think. I get compliments on my skin all the time. But, I combine microderm with Renova, the Obagi line of skin care and a daily sunscreen. It doesn't happen overnight -- it will take several treatments to begin to see results. One single microderm session will not produce results -- it will take several, but that will be determined by a consultation with your aesthetician or doctor.

The answers already posted are correct on how the procedure works. It isn't painful, but may be a bit uncomfortable when you first start getting treatments done. It feels like a pencil eraser being run back and forth across your face. The microderm operator (doctor, aesthetician, etc) can change the settings on the machine to adjust for how "deep" a treatment you should receive.

I go to an aesthetician rather than a doctor because the price is lower.

I had a friend who had it done for bad acne scars and it did make quite an improvement. She had complained of sensitive skin after the procedure but nothing else. The other person gave a great answer on how it is done.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive epidermal treatment that removes the dead and damaged surface layer of skin cells to reveal healthier new skin cells underneath. This stimulates the deeper dermal layer of skin to produce more collagen and elastin, giving the skin a younger, firmer, more supple appearance. Medical-quality microderm-abrasion blasts or "abrades" skin with aluminum oxide crystals applied by a doctor or trained aesthetician. Only licensed professionals at a doctor's office or skin care salon can use these $10,000 FDA-approved devices. Up to 12 treatments is usually required costing thousands of dollars!

Microdermabrasion is a skin-freshening technique that helps repair facial skin that takes a beating from the sun and the effects of aging. The plastic surgeon uses a device like a fine sandblaster to spray tiny crystals across the face, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin. As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation.

Microderm abrasion is a simple, straight forward, non-invasive procedure that revitalizes dull skin, reduces large pores, erases fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, reduces mild pigment irregularities (hyperpigmentation), stretch marks and age spots. It is equally effective to other skin treatments and, most importantly, it allows you to get back to your daily routine immediately after treatment.
Microdermabrasion is a fairly new skin resurfacing treatment that uses special doctor-handled surgical options (like laser skin resurfacing, dermal abrasion) and chemical peels machines or specially-formulated cream kits for home use, in order to rejuvenate and restore natural glow to your skin. The micro dermabrasion procedure is simple and painless and is equally effective to other .
How Microderm Helps?
By removing a very fine skin layer, micro derm abrasion stimulates collagen production, thus encouraging cellular renewal. Old skin is replaced by new healthy skin cells - this is known to help acne, enlarged pores and blackheads, age spots and sun-damaged skin and uneven skin tone (hyperpigmentation).
micro derma abrasion does work well on acne scarring and red marks. •Microdermabrasion mildly exfoliates the top layer of the skin in order to remove superficial acne scarring. It strips a very, very fine layer of skin (but thicker than the layer removed by regular facials) where old acne scar cells are stuck.
