Don't listen to what anybody says about how long you should wait. Everybody will say something different. I (who just went through this 6 weeks ago) was told everything from "oh my GOD!!! I was only in labor for an hour and almost had him on the way to the hospital!" to "if you go too soon you're just going to be strapped a bed for that much longer and regret every minute of it."

This is what my Mother kept saying and I listened. I went to work and was there until 4 pm, when I couldn't take it anymore, and had the baby at 8:35 pm. I didn't get my epidural until almost 8. So I went 4 hours after I "couldn't take it anymore" with NO MEDICATION, because these things take time and while your delivery is the most important thing in the world to you.....to the hospital it is one of many deliveries on that day and you ARE NOT going to receive preferential treatment no matter how deserving of it you feel you are.

I do suggest waiting until they are regular and getting pretty close together and are of moderate strength, because the really intense ones are right around the corner, and even if you don't PLAN on receiving meds, believe me you will AT LEAST reconsider, if you don't completely change your mind. Don't wait so long that you are screaming on the way to the hospital. That's silly and potentially dangerous.

Just go. When things get overwhelming, and they will... very soon, you will be glad you were at the hospital and not on your couch.

Best of Luck to you...You WILL live even it doesn't feel like it...And congratulations!

Time your contractions. Start from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next. That tells you how far apart they are. If they are regular (meaning coming the same amount of time between them) and strong, then it's real labor. Depending on how far you are from the hospital and what advice your Dr gave you, depends on when you should leave for the hospital. I say that if you live more than 30 minutes from the hospital, and your contractions are 5-7 minutes apart.....leave now! It also depends on if this is your 1st pregnancy or subsequent. The first labor is usually longer......after you have had your 1st, they tend to be quicker. Call the Dr or the hospital L&D and tell them what's going on and have them advise you on when they think you should leave. Good luck & congrats!!!

You will have awhile. Call your doctor or clinic so that they know you are coming. You should go in when they are nice and regular and coming on strong which is about when they are 5-10 minutes apart. Regular doesn't always mean like clockwork. You may have one that is two minutes from the last and the next one is 4 minuts from the last. Call the dad or your support person if you haven't already. Shut down the house except for the TV and lights in the room you are in so that you don't have to think about it later. Get your bag near the door and drink some water. By the time you have done all that, it will probably be time to go. Good Luck and Congrats!

Just read your additional info, go now!

Five or 6 minutes apart is a good rule. Don't necessarily wait until they are one minute long. With my second one, my contractions never did get that long. They were only 45 seconds long and then she was born in the car!

the rule of thumb is 4-1-1, contractions 4 minutes apart that last for 1 minute each , and this pattern continues for 1 hour. thats how you will know you are really in labor

Congratulations!

Usually when they are 5 minutes apart. If your water breaks before then, go ASAP. How exciting! Congratulations and Good Luck Mama!

Call labor & delivery at your hosp. They will tell you exactly what to do as far as how far apart they are, or if it's too early how to make them taper off. Also if you feel like you need to have a BM, tell the nurse when you call. She will most likly tell you to come on in. Were you dialated at your last appontment? Tell her...anything you can think of.

You should go as soon as your water breaks or if there's excessive bleeding. Don't wait until the contractions are painful. If your water breaks, you're succeptable to infection.
You've to remember that you've to settle in your room, have enough time to call your doctor and anestesiologist.
