Well............absolute power corrupts absolutely !

I do think Nero has had a bit of a bad press. The fact that he disliked and persecuted Christians hardly makes him unique in history and it is very easy to put our own modern take on the views of ancient peoples. You have to remember that anyone outside of the Roman Empire (as the Christians were) was considered as a "non-person" and no better than an animal.

It was not just Nero who though of himself as a god either. Plenty of leaders through history have thought this, other Roman emperors certainly did, the Pharaohs in Egypy were considered to be gods, and so on.

Anyway, in answer to your question, I (as everyone else no doubt) would like to think that unlimited power would not effect me. I somehow doubt, however, that this amount of authority would not lead you to become just a little nutty.

I think you may be confusing Nero with Caligula. It was Caligula who declared himself and his sister/wife to be divine during his reign. He was utterly hatstand, a nutcase. Compared to him Nero was merely very arrogant with some deeply unpleasant habits.

To answer your question, no I would never behave like Nero. He was sexually bloodthirsty and had an incestuous relationship with his mother who he then murdered. All round he was a pretty disgusting individual.

Nero - the first rock star emperor.
But he wasn't totally insane and he didn't think he was a god - that was Gaius (Caligula) before him and Elagabalus after.

You do understand that Nero was considered "The Antichrist." (You STILL want to give a try?) He burned a part of Rome, blamed the christians, and persecuted them with relentless fury. He also wrapped them in sheets, stake them to the ground, and burn them while he rode around in his chariot. And this was in his backyard, so to speak. I don't even think Atheists would want him around dude.

I'd like to think I would have more self control, but I also know that my impulse control would need some serious work.
The problem with absolute power is that no one tells you when you screw up. Tehy are too afraid to say anything negative.

Fortunately, I can't play the fiddle so there would be no need to burn down Rome just to get rid of me.
