He would only kill other adult male lions and they dont always kill them, its only if they are stronger than the other adult males and those adults didnt want to back down. The male will eliminated all offspring male or female, that are nursing at the time, to rid the pride of the old males genes, so he can being to propogate his own genes. He is an opportunist, Male lions are only in control of a pride for a short time, 2 years at most, females only have 1 to 2 litters of cubs a year and they dont always make it. So he has to get busy right away. He needs to kill those other cubs to bring the females back into heat in a few weeks, so he can have his own offspring. Its the way of mother nature, all animals goals in life, is one thing, to carry on there genetic lines. We have other things to look forward too as humans so we dont put emphasis on it as much as animals do, but its the one major thing that drives any animal. To breed and to have as many offspring as possible. Its not brutal, its just Natural. We consider it brutal cause its not our #1 priority.

The reason a male lion will kill all the cubs when he takes over a pride is that it will bring the females back into heat so he can propogate his own genetics and pass on his own legacy rather than raising another males cubs. It is brutal, but it is nature.

In theory, the strongest male kills all the offspring of the weaker males to eliminate the weaker gene pool. In a lot of species only the dominant individuals are allowed to reproduce. This means constant improvement of the breed. It's not brutal,it's only "natural selection" in practice.Perhaps our specie would benefit by a little attention to our gene pool.
