I currently use AppleWorks6 for word processing and I am (apparently) supposed to be able to transfer my files to my new Macbook which runs iWorks 'Pages'. But Pages will not recognise my old AppleWorks 6 files. Is there a reason for this? Am I doing something wrong? I thought this would be simple because that's what it says on the box. It says I don't need any special translating software, so what's going on?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated, thank you.

Transfer your AppleWorks applications to your new MacBook. You can do this by connecting to your iBook from your MacBook over a network connection, logging into your iBook from the MacBook and dragging your AppleWorks folder from the Applications folder on your iBook to the Applications folder on your MacBook. If you don't wish to do that, you can always try saving your AppleWorks projects in different formats that are more common, such as Rich Text or HTML.

I don't believe there is a "converter". I've never had any trouble opening Microsoft Office files in iWork, but I've never tried any AppleWorks files.

Save the file as a normal text file or as an rtf instead of appleworks file that way it can be read by all programs

If your Macbook is less than 90 days old or you bought Apple Care, call Apple support. My guess is the converter is on the OS X DVD but not installed yet.
