An elephant's tusk is made out of ivory. Ivory is very expensive and is considered to be a very luxurious material, and there is a very large illegal market of it in many Asian countries. It is very hard to find and it is used to make a lot of things such as chopsticks, and now mainly piano keys. Because of the difficulty in getting ivory, and of the greed in some people, there are a large number of elephants in Asia being inhumanely slaughtered for their tusks. Tusks are only found on the male elephant in Asia, so there is a shortage of male elephants. The cruelty of collecting ivory to sell for profit has been going on for a very long time and still is the centre of controversy between animal activists. It isn't very nice to be killed just because some hunter wants your teeth to be made into chopsticks and piano keys.

Well, they're teeth. So they are made of what teeth are made of. Really quite similar to yours: pulp, dentine, cementum and the enamel. Some people may say ivory but they are ivory not really made ivory. In that sense, your teeth are ivory too. Ivory, as you may know is valuable. Elephants are poached for it. It's too bad since you still can have the ivory from them, you just wait for them to live their life out. You get bigger tusks too.
