okay I had to laugh at the last couple of answers but in all seriousness. I think a lot of those "fantasy" creatures had to be based loosely on truth. IF you read the Bible.. and I am not pushing any type of religion here.. just using it as an example, there are stories of hundreds of wierd creatures that supposedly did and do exist. Heaven is said to house some of the most magnificent creatures that we could not possibly imagine. SO to think that some of our folklore and myths are based on people and creatures that lived thousands of years ago is not that hard to comprehend. I personally find it more enjoyable to think that if these beings DID exist the stories themselves are more interesting.

I'd rather believe in tall gracefu good elves than evil wicked
short ones, or wicked evil tall ones than compared to good short
ones, if you get what I mean!

I still think of elves as short little fat guys with pointy ears that run around your garden and hide your loose change.

I know this sounds hokey, but I have a picture of a flower bed with what looks like a small, thin fairy. Maybe it was a mutated dragonfly. When blown up it looks like a fairy. who knows...isnt it just more fun to be idealistic sometimes?

that would be cool and lord of the ring-ish, but I don't think so.
more like, knee high terrible creatures that prowl the night entrapping unwary walkers, thats more accurate by legend.

I thought that they were little, very little, size of a match box, and had wings, and were fair.
