It's safe, but it's really not necessary to run it more than once a week.

This is a very subjective issue. A number of people believe it works and enhances performance while another group of people calls it "scratch of an ***" because scratching it will not remove dark spots. :)
My experience has been a mix up of both, i.e. using a smaller drive I felt it does help me increasing performance of PC but using a 80 gig now, I feel totally upwards down.
Frequency of defragging depends upon your usage, for example, if you are not too much into installing games and programs and deleting the older ones every weekend it suggests that the data on drive is fragmented which necessitates defragmentation.
I would suggest that notice the performance of your PC before and after defragmentation, if it is not very visible then I would suggest not doing defrag because in my opinion defragging does wear the drive out over a period of time. By the way, it has been a long time since I defragged my drive last (my brother is a gaming freak he keeps installing and deleting too much).
If you are using, NTFS then there is less need of defragmenting the drive.
However, it is advisable from defragging to clean your hard drive from temporary and useless files, for example, termporary Internet files, temporary folder, recycle bin, etc.
Hope that answers!

If you're using XP with NTFS instead of the older FAT32 file system, you shouldn't need to Defrag more than once every 3 to 6 months.
To find out what file system you are using, go to My Computer and right-click on your C: drive and choose Properties. On the General Tab you will see the file system in use.
Then, click on the Tools Tab and choose Defrag now. Click on the "Analyze" button. XP will tell you if you need to Defrag.

Generally, it is safe to run whenever you like. But, I would click on "analyze" first to see if it does need to defrag and go from there,

not necessarily, unless you add or delete lots of programs in your pc in a week. defragging merely removes unnecessary gaps in the sectors to make your pc run faster

Yep have to agree with sasyone. Executive Software Diskeeper. Set it and forget it. Runs in the background and uses very little of your system resources.

The best thing I did for my computer was get "executive software" its a automatic defragger that runs every day or however you set it.My computer is almost twice as fast as before.

Do it once a week. It helps your computer go faster, and stuff that doesn't work might work. Don't think this is the best answer, but i hope it helps.
