You have two options.

First of all, right click on my computer, click properties, then click hardware in the tabs. After click device manager. You do not want to tamper with anything here trust me. But it gives you a whole list, click on modems and if you have any it should clearly display that. (Assuming this is Windows XP, but should be similar unless you have MAC) If you have a modem then go get AOL or other internet service in a store. Don't worry about ports, if you have a modem installed, most likely you have a port that works. The instructions for installation is extremely easy just follow directions on internet service box.

Second option, if you want wireless internet. Check for wireless adapter, in the same device manager thing. If you do then get an internet service along with a wireless router. You specified no specific information so its kind of hard to get in detail.

Hope this helps :)

What do you mean you want the internet? Are you looking for a wired or wireless connection? How old is the laptop; does it have an Ethernet port or a wireless card?

You need a wireless router. Contact your Internet provider and they should be able to help you or you may be able to save money by purchasing the router instead of leasing it. Either way you will need to contact your Internet provider so they can tell you how to properly hook up the wireless router.

It would help to know if it is on a wireless account or if you have it plugged in.

Its not the type of computer, its the hardware that you have in it.
