AIDS has a lot to with it. People were portrayed as victims, even though their illness was self-induced.
Generally, things like this happen because of an erosion in standards, and new avenues of legal defense.
Homosexuality is deviant behavior, and not what nature intended.
Don't let all this politically correct talk fool you. Smart people are often lonely people.

Because we take to change very slowly, especially when it goes against what we have been taught for our whole lives. I am a Christian and I am not gay, but I believe that God says all sin is equal. If God can forgive a murderer, then why wouldn't he forgive a gay person. I am a firm believer in all people are equal and it doesn't matter what their sexual orientation is. Back in the 60's interracial relationships where a severe taboo, but now (though still looked down upon in some areas) is an every day occurence. I think as our society grows and evolves we will see that making laws against gay people will not stop them from 'being gay', but will just ignite a fire of independence and a want of freedom. Our country was founded upon the belief that ALL are created equal. It would be unconstitutional and go against the morals our forefathers set for us if we continue to make gay people second class citizens.

You know what? You really do have a point... What is the deal with laws against gay marriage and if there are more laws restricting gay lifestyle that I don't know about, why? Basically you don't have to accept the gay way of life, just as back in the dark ages and even still some today that didn't/don't accept that woman should have equal rights as men, and didn't/don't accept that blacks should be free.
Not sure on what grounds you are resting the case that it goes against what America was founded on. Seeing as America is the "Land of the Free", my interpretation is a gay lifestyle is one that people should be free to choose.

Every teaching that the American belief system was founded on? What do you mean by that? Religious belief? Then you pushing YOUR belief system on us GOES AGAINST EVERYTHING THAT THIS COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED ON!
If you follow your argument there as well, we would STILL have slavery! This country was founded on THAT in addition. The fact is that times are changed, and we need to figure out how to change with what is the right thing to do, despite the protests of the people like you.
No one is asking you to accept my way of life as morally right. But as an AMERICAN, the laws require you to accept it, legally! Morally is irrelavant! If the founding fathers would have thought gays were wrong, they would have PUT it into our constitution! THAT is the reason that courts are deciding for us, and that is why people are trying to change the constitution. It is THOSE people who are the activists, not the judges who are simply upholding the current laws

You don't. You have your right to your beliefs.
All you have to accept is their right to live their lives in any way that does not harm you. And if you feel that recognition of gay marriage diminishes your own, then i would suggest reconsidering what it is that gives worth to your marriage.
Why are the laws against their way of life? Because, despite constitutional restrictions to the contrary, your religion has been imposed on all Americans, whether they believe your religion or not.
--Straight, but not narrow
P.S. There is no American belief system.

There have been laws against your saying what you are now saying. Do you want that enforced also??? A century ago a man named Comstock got some laws passed and he went through all of the libraries of the medical schools and removed ALL books that had anything to do with sex - OB-GYN doctors and students did not have even a text book to work with because he decided that they were immoral. Who are you to decide what is moral or not. You - like Comstock - are one person. If the PUBLIC not a single person or an elitist few decide what is moral for me then we have a problem. And the American belief system says that you have the right to say what you say, but then the people whom you think do not have that right do also.

If you don't accept our way of life, fine.
But you can at least respect it.
And the laws should respect every citizen's lifestyle as long as it is within the law.
Last time I checked, being gay wasn't illegal.
The gay-rights group keep pushing for tolerance, respect and acknowledgement of their lifestyle.
Btw, what is the American belief-system? Is it judaism, protestantism, evangelism, catholicism? Or is it liberalism, conservatism, capitalism or socialism?

Gay Rights Groups do NOT ask for you to change your own morals or social codes, however archaic. What they DO ask for is that you display your morals with a degree of dignity, tolerance, and an understanding that not everyone THINKS as you do. The line in the pledge to the flag reads, :"With liberty and justice for ALL.": Not, "With liberty and justice for anyone who is white, male, christian, and straight."
It's a matter of civil rights, babe, not of morals. I don't give a hoot WHAT you believe, where (or if) you go to church or synagogue, or how you live at home. I DO care however, when my basic, human, civil rights are denied because "the other side" tries to impose their "morality" on me. I indeed should have a right to love who I want, marry who I want, and live the way I want to live... so long as it doesn't hurt anyone.
My question for you is: do you really KNOW any gay people? I'll bet you don't. Here's a challenge for you: Go out and meet a gay person, get to really know him/ her. You'll see he/she is not so different from you afterall. We're your doctors, lawyers, school teachers, police women and firemen etc. etc. We pay taxes just like you, go to church perhaps just like you, and put our trousers on one leg at a time.... just like you..
So... keep your "morals", but open your mind, read a book, and learn the truth about your brothers and sisters who happen to be gay. I'll bet you'll be surprised. And if you still believe that it's morally wrong, well good for you! That's your right to interpret the Bible any way you want. Just don't spew hateful rhetoric that denies or subverts human beings who are different from you.
Remember when people in the south used to justify- both religously and politically- that it was OK to segregate African-Americans in schools, from water fountains, and in hospitals? Um yeah.... enough said.
Peace.
Oh, and PS... not every gay person is liberal. Many are conservative. www.logcabin.org. See, you really DID learn something from someone who happens to be gay. Now go out there, and be nice.

What's the "American belief system"? What "teachings" was it based on? What laws are there against gay people's way of life? If gay people aren't hurting anyone else by their actions, then it's nobody's business but their own.

That is a good question..."why all the laws against their way of life"?
My thought on this is; if you don't accept it, well your entitiled to your opinion and thats what America is all about. As in all things, if I don't like something, I don't partake in it, or I don't eat it, or I just leave it alone...not my business anymore, I don't agree with it so onward to bigger and better things. So just leave it alone and shut the #!& up. Some people like to stir the pot as they having nothing in their own lives worth meditating on, it makes their own life seem more important somehow. If it doesn't concern you..leave it alone.
And just what is wrong with their life style?? does it concern you? do you wish you could? why do you care? Is your life so perfect you can start looking for flaws in others? Are they flaws? Just what do you know anyway???about anything? Who decides what color a rose will be? If people would spend more time cleaning up their own back yard instead of worring about their neighbors, this would be a pretty cool world. Concentrate on whats right in your world instead of whats wrong with the rest of the world...thats quality time.

The laws against their lifestyle is founded in religious reasons, and because of that very reason is invalid. Gays are not saying that they are morally right, you can believe that they are wrong till the day you die. Gays are saying that they are legally right, as two consenting adults, and that there is no good legal reason, other than religious ones which are not allowed to influence laws, to prevent them from loving one another.
