Platelets are pieces of large cells called megakaryocetes. Platelets float thru the blood stream and help blood vessels stop bleeding when they are cut.

Details: Platelets are small, about 3 micra in diameter whereas red blood cells are 7 micra in diameter. Platelets are not cells because they have no nuclei. They are like bags of cytoplasm. However, they can form a 'platelet clot' or plug when you're cut.
