The easiest way to control blackberry bushes is by purchasing any of the current brush-controlling products that contains the active ingredient called; "TRICLOPYR". It is sold in most hardwarde stores under the name "Brush-B-Gone" or "Brush Killer". By using this, it will kill your blackberries completely.... usually within one application.
You can spray the leaves of the blackberries OR apply the spray to the base of the bush. By making a basal application (to the area where the blackberry plant emerges from the soil), you'll be able to use less product and obtain better results. Make sure you thoroughly soak the entire stems.
Another possible way to kill the blackberry plants is to cut back the plant and IMMEDIATELY (within 10 minutes) apply the Triclopyr to the cut surface. The plant will absorb the product and translocate it down to the roots.... in the same manner as "Roundup". (Roundup is a good product but isn't able to control blackberry bushes by itself)
Please keep in mind that if you have flowers and other ornamental plants nearby, you run the risk of getting spray drift from this product onto them which could result in some damage. You may want to temporarily shield your ornamental plants with plastic prior to spraying.
Tricolpyr is very effective on Poison Oak, Poison Ivy, and other broadleaved-weeds/bushes. You can apply it to your lawn to control dandelions, spurge and oxalis without any damage to the grass.
It's an excellent product and very easy to use!
Hope you found this information helpful. Good luck in controlling those pesky blackberry bushes!

The best way is to dig them up by the roots then till the area. You can also spray some root killer after that but it probably isn't necessary. Dig and till about a foot in diameter around the bushes as well so you make sure to get any roving roots as well. Good luck!

To get rid of the blackberry bush you must dig down very deep. They produce a network of roots that can be troublesome. It will take alot of arm work or you can get someone to dig them with a tractor. Tilling them will only spread them. Good Luck!!! PS. You will be able to make many jars of yummy jam!!!!

You will need to find the mother root ball of the plants where all of the branches are coming from. Then dig it up carefully from down at the bottom of the roots and either replant it somewhere out of the way or destroy the plant. If you are thinking about destroying the plant you might ask someone in your neighbor hood if they would like the plants as blackberries are a delicious fruit.

Tilling them will help, but I agree with couchp above. You have to find the root ball. All of the blackberries around here died from being mowed down all the time.

A cheap and environmentally safe method is boiling water on the shoots, One other is vinegar but you may have to wait to grow any thing and you may have to amend your soil following this treatment..

You can use a brush killer - or you can keep pulling them up until they disappear.
