Media companies go with what sells. They have to have sponsors, so if the show is not popular, they lose sponsors, that is the only way the media companies make money, is by having sponsors. The higher the number of viewers, the media company can demand more money for commercial time. It is all about money. Even the newspapers and new channels do the same thing, it is all about what grabs the consumer. If it was geared to what we want to see, there would be no commercials!

I often thought it was a mixture of the 2. There are producers out there that make the programmes they are passionate about. This leads to either programmes that we love and want to watch or self indulgent rubbish. There are those that produce "product". This also gives us a bit of both.
All in all though I think alot of producers are forced to abide by the "lowest common denominator" rule so as to reach as many as possible and keep the ratings high. Cult hit's are few and far between and are generally not "bankable" whereas bland nothings kind of satisfy everyone (not to the extent where you love it, but enough to allow them to slip by un noticed)
Once the programme is out there and has an audience, that's when the manipulation starts.

Government controlled corporate mass media. T.V. is ****. It only tells you what you want to hear and see. The media likes to brain wash you and give false information. The news is bogus, it only tells something like less than 5% of whats really going on in the real world, the news is edited, and not all story's are broadcast, there are news panels that decide what they want to show and what not to show. It's yellow journalism. Don't believe it! The media tells lies all the time.

i like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert if basically because of the fact they modern modern activities with humor, albeit darkish humor. regrettably, all media inclusive of their shows are owned, operated, enormously censored and tightly controlled via multinational mega companies, maximum exceptionally the oil and weapons industries. Even N.P.R. and P.B.S. are severely constrained in what they cover and how they cover it. it incredibly is why all information insurance is incredibly lots a similar, why you could turn by way of one hundred channels and spot a similar form of no longer something and why we under no circumstances hear of the oil marketplace's area in coming up the starvation, poverty, ailment and genocides around the globe. If shall we ever get around to putting international limits on wealth and poverty, we would see a transformation in the media besides. stated examining: straightforward Wealth, via Jeffrey Sachs. It fairly would not have lots to do including your question or the media. basically a coarse blueprint for a saner international.

Absoluetly, they never showed:
-They only talk about the U.S. soldiers who are killed in Iraq but they never show the ones who commited suicide
- The international child sex trade that includes dozens of Americans
- The billions of dollars missing from the Iraq war
- The man who is suing the U.S. for the creation of AIDS
- The many people who have taken the IRS to court to keep their property and have won, there is no law that says the IRS can take your property
Interesting, isn't it? Yes, it is brainwashing

I think it's a little of both...
Comedy central wouldn't give Rush Limbaugh his on show on their station...even if people wanted it..for example
But, if a company wants to make money and stay in business, then they have to appease the audience at least some of the time

It is a controlled media. They put on what they want us to watch and what they decide what we can handle and only after that do they concern themselves about ratings.

They get us used to watching what they want us to watch by using shows that we get attracted to from their advertisements. It's because each program pays more to be showed more and get a high viewing rate and earn more... And all this with us only watching stupid disappointing programs because there's nothing else to watch.

a bit of both. they think we would like that new show "heroes" because we all like to think we can be that hero. whilst at the same time they know that we will watch it because it looks good. secondly look at ugly betty. they wanted us to watch that because it would bring in millions of viewers whilst at the same time they new many people could relate to ugly betty. therefore it's a bit of black and white or both. x
