My windshield broke over the winter and some moisture seeped in and sat for at least a month before it was repaired. Now, although the car interior looks immaculate, it has a strong musty mildewy smell. I don't know where to begin to clean it. Any suggestions?

Have the carpets and seats steam cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner. Ask them about spraying a sanatizer to help kill any mold or mildew.

Don't just go to the car wash and let the inexperienced detail people do this. You want this done right. Check the phone book and find a owner operated carpet cleaning company. That is your best solution to get it fixed correctly.

Any and everywhere try Lysol on the carpet first in a little patch to make sure it wont alter the color of your interior or laundry soap and a shop-vac and fa-breeze does wonders also and if that doesn't work sometimes its in your vents they have something at the parts store that cleans out your air vents I don't remember what it's called but I'm sure if you ask an employee they should be able to help you out. If you can't tell I've had the same problem before I had a leak in my trunk and every time it rained my back seat would fill up with a few inches of water.

I have cleaned many cars with smells that kept coming back. When the water leaked in it got the padding under the carpet wet and that is where the smell is coming from. The only way to truely get rid of the smell is to replace the padding under the carpet. It is a dense wool type material that insulates and deadens sound great, but will also hold on to a smell.

Good advice from many here. I would add, to kill mold spray with amonia. Leave the windows down after spraying for at least 6 hours before using the vehicle. Then use an air freshener spray.

Try to steam clean the seats and floor. if you dont have a steam cleaner then go buy some oxy spray (amor all brand) that will really clean what ever is causing the smell. (aloso plastic mats on the floor cause a nasty odor)

Some of that smell is probably due to mold & mildew you can't see. It can be tough to get trid of that. Try using Arm & Hammer baking soda rug deodorizer as a start. Clean other hard surfaces with Fantastik (with bleach).

Good luck.
