The Establishment is THE group in charge and usually has much power. For example, in the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope and the Curia are the establishment. In a state, it is the government as it is in a nation. In a college or university, it is the Board of Trustees. Most of those who wield power are looked upon with suspicion by those over whom the wield that power. So "The Establishment" has become a negative term.

"Establishment" refers to any governmental, academic, or corporate group that exercise control over items of public interest. It is usually used in the negative sense because the "control" aspect is viewed as intrusive, or negligent.

The best example that comes to mind is Bush's sudden interest in the welfare of wounded troops returning from Iraq. One might ask - since wars cause great amounts of suffering and debilitation - why taking decent care of wounded troops wasn't part of the decision to bring war upon a nation in March 2003.

The establishment, in this case, appears to have had NO INTEREST in the welfare of the returning troops. And the "establishment" is now saying (March 2007) "Oh me oh my, how terrible - let me look into this tragedy like I did the Katrina victims"
