People don't take their commitment seriously. They leave the second they feel the least bit of unhappiness. People get married simply because they are afraid of being alone or because they think that's what they are supposed to do.

There are so many reasons!
Time has changed. Both sexes have so much expectations of the other.
The man expects the wife to continue to be submissive in an era where women feel liberated.
The woman expects the the husband to be the perfect man for her when in reality he's imperfect from the beginning.
And then there are so many options for both of them when they dont want to keep that commitment. They can separate, divorce, remarry, or get a new 'friend' when there are no longer any taboos on divorce or separation.

I really think it is lack of commitment. People get all caught up in preparations for a big wedding and the excitement of it all and then once they settle into real life, they aren't happy. People should think long and hard about the wedding vows and if they are really ready to make that kind of commitment. It seems to me that these days, when the going gets tough, people give up and get divorced. Marriage is for better or worse. If you have a true partnership you will work toegether to get through the bad times and enjoy the good times together.

We've been happily married 36 years, and here are what I consider to be some of the key elements of a successful relationship - married or otherwise.
The absence/lack of any one of these could put a relationship on the slippery slope to divorce/separation:
1) A long list of common interests; things you both enjoy doing TOGETHER as opposed to separate interests and separate groups of friends.
2) A lot of tolerance for each other's differences. As much as you share in common, you're still going to rub one another wrong from time to time. Be mature and deal with it. Separate the small $h!t from the serious stuff.
3) A sense of compromise; so that you can work out your problems with a minimum of emotional trauma. It's marital negotiation.
4) A sense of sympathy and forgiveness. You're both going to screw up on occasion. You need to be able to forgive, forget, and move on with the relationship.

gud question! divorce rate is v.high in the developed countries, i think its 80%.
in my country, its not even 10%...but things are changing.
1. people must be prepared to support each other in both good and bad times. if someone loses a job or is gng thru a rough patch, the wife calls him a loser and walks out on him. One has to sacrifice SOMETHING in a r'ship.
as a result, one is always running after love, looking for true love even at the age of 70....there are kids from 4-5 diff marriages , who have hardly ever had the stability of living with natural parents.
my parents stayed together all their lives, for nearly 1/2 a century.
2. people's PRIORITIES are wrong when they marry. you must marry for the right reasons, not for money/looks etc.
3. we are all highly educated, i will stand by my hubby no matter what, though nobody can take me for a ride...i mean, i will never forgive domestic violence or cheating etc.
every person has his or her own guiding principles in life, i guess maturity+commitment+loyalty are the pillars of success in a haapy marital life.

For one thing, no-fault divorce laws. Couple this with people jumping into marriage with the "if it doesn't work I can always leave" mindset, instead of the "until death do us part" mindset.

I think it's two reasons....
1. Talking is not communicating....understanding each other is communicating.
2. You both have to be committed to having a happy and healthy marriage and both of you do what's necessary to achieve that.

Because people rush into marriage and don't really know the person is that they are getting married to. And when problems arise instead of actually facing them and trying to work them out they run from them instead.

People don't want to take the time to work at their marriage and just give up and move on to someone else.

Because people never take commitment seriously anymore. It's really sad. But I know I'm going to be different from that =]
