Yes you can but you must have the means to pay off the amount and you will have to take a life insurance out to cover you at death so that the mortgage will be paid off. Seems a bit extreme. If you need money using your property as a surety look into an equity release scheme.

I know the Halifax will give mortgages to pensioners so I imagine a lot of the other banks will too.

As long as your debt ratio and credit score are ok, there should be no problem getting a mortgage.
