3 men give out $10 each to the hotel manager. =$30

but the manager decided give a discount $25 and give back $1 each to the men so he get $2 as a profit.

now you see if each men pays $9 to the manager and the manager got $2 on his hand.

if you calculate
3x9=27
27+2=29

so on the hand of the manager is $29 but it suppose to be $30. where is the another $1 go?

try and calculate if you dont understand what i mean. then you will get it. and have a big question mark on your head thinking.

Clever. It's pretty evident you didn't get this problem. This question was put up at this site about 1000 times. I've provided a link to the website where I think everyone got this. Solution is included.

At the beginning each of the men is at 0, and so is the store manager. This means zero change from what things were in the beginning.

The men each give the manager $10. The status is now:

Manager +$30
Art -$10
Brian -$10
Charlie -$10

The manager gives a dollar back to each:

Manager +$27
Art -$9
Brian -$9
Charlie -$9

The total is still zero.

The manager's $27 consists of $25 that he charged the men and $2 that he profits by. The equation is:

Revenue - cost = profit
$27 - $2 = $25.

In other words, you are supposed to SUBTRACT the $2 from the $27 to get $25, which is his cost, since the $2 is a profit.

A little bit of finagled English language is what makes it seem that there is a missing dollar.

I don't understand ur question at all.
3 men give manager $10. Total $30.
Manager gives back $1. Total $27.
Discounted price is $25.
Profit after discount is $27 - $25 = $2.
Hand of manager has $27 (where u get $29 from?)

Regards.

What logic says that what the 3 men THINK they paid for the room must add to what the manager has in his pocket(s) to result in the original $30??

Let the manager rent the room for $20: Manager takes $10, gives each (of 3 men) $1. Now 3x$9 = $27; add the $7 "profit" in the manager's pocket and we have $34! WOW! We're minting money. LOL

[...and yes, we do seem to be seeing this "problem" or minor modifications of it rather frequently.]

Amount paid by the men = 3 x 8 = 27

Amount collected total = 25(by hotel) + 2(by manager) = 27

Everything is in balence. The 30 is irrelevant to the problem.

The other dollar is the change. $25 divided 3 ways is $8.33 per man. So lets do the math one more time quickly:
3 guys, told $10 each, give $30.
guy decides afterwards to make it $25, so keeps $25 ($8.33 per man), and gives back $1 to each man and keeps $2 for himself. this sum is 8.33+8.33+8.33+1+1+1+2=30

the other scenario:
3 guys, told $9 each, give $27, and the manager has $2, for $29
since they each gave in a "whole" dollar
amount, there was no change for the manager to accumulate, as the guys didn't put in $9.33, they just put in $9.

It won't be $30 because they paid $10 each for the first time. If they paid $9, it means to say they subtracted $1 each and the manager has got only $2 on his hand, it would lack by $1. Gets?

Not weird, just that people tend to twist their head by miscalculate.

do this and you will have no problem..

Give all the money back.. and ask them to give the manager evenly

it will be 25 / 3 = 8 something..

then it will be even.

This kind of math twisted people mind because of the whole number. While 3 is not an even number.

Well, you said that all the men pay only $9 to the manager, so they each get $1 back.

your thinking about it the wrong way around.

There would not be an extra 1 as you are supposed to be looking at it from the $25.

3x9=27

he uses the 25 for costs and is left with 2.

he gets 27 off them and 25 is used for his business or whatever which leaves 2 in his hand.
