Taking a self-centered view, falling off the wagon may not matter much for YOU yourself, as long as you get back up there and eventually stay there, so that you get some stability and give yourself a chance to make a decent life for yourself.

But falling off can matter very much to the people with whom you are presently involved--spouse, parents, employer, close friends, etc. Each time you fall off, you may be significantly undermining things between yourself and these other people. By falling off you can wreck your marriage, strain your relationship with family members to the breaking point, lose your job--so, falling off can matter very much, and the sooner you get back up and STAY on the wagon the better off everyone will be for it.

I am always falling off the wagon, but by the time I get up again it has raced away from me and I have to run to catch it again so that I can get on again

Depends on how often you fall off and if the idea that you can get back on is just an excuse to let yourself fall off...

Yes. It matters. If I fall off, I can loose track of my life and end up in a hospital, in jail or dead.

If you get back up there and you didn't get too hurt in your fall, then it's all good.

Well, some people would think it is a set back, but if you get right back on you should just go from there. =)
