Actually the cheetah is not the fastest land animal. Maybe it is the fastest Mammal, but not the fastest animal. The Tiger Beetles (family Carabidae, sub family Cicindellidae) are actually much faster....pound for pound that is.
But if you are talking just overall speed as viewed by us, then yeah the cheetah is the fastest.

The fastest land animal IS cheetah .Nothing has taken the place from it.The cheetah can sprint upto speeds of about 110kmph in short burst. But it gets exhausted after about a minute.Antelopes can run at about 70kmph and keep up the pace for minutes.

The fastest land animal is the cheetah, for short stretches. It can go up to 70mph, or somewhere around that. The second fastest is the pronghorn at 60mph. And even though the cheetah can run faster, the pronghorn can run for AGES.
But if you mean size/speed comparison, the tiger beetles and cockroaches are the fastest, along with a certain lizard I can't remember the name of. Compared to those, the cheetah is slow.
For air, a diving peregrine falcon can reach speeds up to 180mph, perhaps a bit more. They go up, then they fold their wings and go DOWN, really, really, really fast.

If you're talking about as a species, it's the cheetah, however, the fastest individual animal is Rosie O'Donnell running to the head of the line at a free buffet.

The cheetah is and will probably always be the fastest. But, if you are still skeptical, you can look in a 2007 almanac, and i'm sure they have that in there..

I was also thinking it was the cheetah. You could "Google" it and may find your answer. If it isn't the cheetah I would be afraid to see what it was!!!!!! Good Luck on finding your answer.
