well on live bearers such as platies and mollies.. the male fish has a stick like organ underneath it's belly which is called a gonopodium.
we can call it a thingy. On swordtails males are the ones with the sword. On guppies the male is the one with the more colorful tail. always remember that all male livebearers have a gonopodium.On goldfish the only way to tell a male is during breeding season in which the males will develop these little dots on their cheeks.If one cheek have 5 dots on it then the right cheek should also have 5 dots on it too. some african cichlids have a different color from the male and females.on convict cichlids the female has a red belly and the male doesn't.

sometimes male and female fish have different coloring, sizes, appearances, and many more things that are different..but it all depends on the type of fish you have. you could ask the place were you got the fish how to tell, they usually know alot about that.

The girl fish is always checking out her reflection in the glass. The boy fish is the one checking her out at the same time

Male: white spots near gills and tails NOT WHITE SPOT their spots are smaller Female: big bellies because she is carrying eggs not swim bladder or dropsy

typicaly the mail is more colorfull, the mail has an anle fin the (nautical terms here) femail has 2 fins on the Left and Right side just afte the middle (Midships if you will) on the under belly (Stern/Keel)

It depends on the type of fish.
GENERALLY: The male is brighter coloured with larger fins (for showing off). But this is not always true.
